We are brothers, Damon and Jono Koerner, wine lovers from way back. We grew up in the Clare Valley but have since spent time working and living around Australia and overseas.
We make wine from the Clare Valley and Adelaide Hills, under three different brands – Koerner Wine, LEKO Wine and Brothers Koerner.
We work with both traditional and unique varieties and focus on staying honest to the variety and the vineyard.
Our winemaking philosophy is simple – to make wines that reflect their place in the world, wines that are made in the vineyard.
We believe the date of picking is the most crucial part of the process. Once the grapes make their way to the winery we work with each batch individually.
An understanding of terroir and the individual varieties enables us to produce unique wines using nothing but the grapes and a small amount of sulphur. We are currently implementing organic practices within our vineyards.
Ultimately we aim to produce wines to a style that we enjoy drinking. Generally these wines are light, fresh, textured and well structured – easy drinking wines. To achieve this we pick early and use a minimal intervention winemaking style.
Our reds are bright, vibrant and can be enjoyed young with a great balance between primary fruit, acidity and phenolics.
Our whites are aromatic, expressing primary fruit while showing mouthfeel, structure and texture.
Koerner Wine was established in 2014 with the intent to make unique wine from the Clare Valley.
The wines are mainly produced from our family vineyard, Gullyview. We also source fruit from neighbouring vineyards, Parish and Vivian. All fruit is grown within a 750m radius.
With a focus on fruit quality and transparent winemaking, our wines are textural and approachable, light, fresh, and ultimately easy drinking.
LEKO Wine is our Adelaide Hills sister brand and represents ‘Lenswood Koerner’.
In 2017 Damon and his wife Maddy bought a property in Lenswood, which is now home to our winery. Our family has also had a long history living and owning vineyards in the Northern hills area. Damon developed a passion for the Adelaide Hills through his 10 years as a viticulturist in the region.
The focus of LEKO is working with select vineyards primarily in Piccadilly, Balhannah and Lenswood. We work with varieties suited to the cooler climate including Chardonnay, Savagnin, Gamay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc.
We are very excited that 2022 will be the first year we produce a home block Chardonnay from our Lenswood vineyard.
Brothers Koerner showcases our two regions, the Clare Valley and the Adelaide Hills. Both areas are climatically unique and produce distinctly different wines. However, our aim is to make them in a similar way, picking fruit early and taking a minimal intervention approach to the winemaking.
Our focus is on classic varieties, with Brothers giving us a platform to continue experimenting with our winemaking across both regions.
Ultimately we aim to make really good wine that appeals to all palates.
